Prologue

December 2012

It’s been three months since my life changed in the blink of an eye. I was planning a wedding to the most amazing man – a man who I already thought I’d lost once. Fortunately, he hadn’t given up on us and he had found me again. In the short time we were together, he taught me to trust – to trust in love, to trust in him and to trust in us.
I was an up-and-coming, government editor at the Washington Post – partly because of Rich and partly because of my hard work, perseverance and dedication. I loved my job. It was my dream come true.
Rich had also given me the best gift possible when I found out that I was pregnant. At the time, I didn’t know I even wanted children of my own. It wasn’t really something I thought too much about. I was over thirty and hadn’t been in a committed relationship for a number of years, but once I saw those two little pink lines – I wanted nothing more than to be a mom.
We were planning a Christmas wedding. I knew I would be showing by then, but I had always dreamt of getting married surrounded by glowing evergreens. In fact, Rich and his best man, Blake, had already used their connections and secured the Weather Room on the sixty-seventh floor of Rockefeller Center. Typically, the room was only available from January through mid-November, but Rich and Blake were quite a team and once they batted their eyelashes a few times, the event coordinator caved and allowed us to rent the private space for December 15.
It would have been beautiful, overlooking the magical tree that Rich had taken me to a year earlier. I was so stubborn at that point. If only I had opened my heart to him then, maybe I wouldn’t be sitting here alone now – on the same day that was supposed to be the happiest day of my life.
Just as the first of the day’s tears started trickling down my cheeks, I heard a light knocking on my door. Seriously, I feel like I’d been crying since that day in September. I didn’t think it was possible to have so many tears stored in the human body. I was hoping that eventually they would just dry up, but I was starting to believe that would never happen.
Rising from the couch, I padded my way to the front door. Looking out the peephole, I saw Cassidy waving at me from the other side. I was relieved to know I wouldn’t have to spend the afternoon alone. Earlier, I had insisted that my father go out for the afternoon even though he reassured me time and again that he would cancel his plans.
I had moved back to Michigan right before Thanksgiving. I tried to make it work in Washington D.C. and at the Post, but it was just too difficult. The memories, idle curiosity and constant condolences proved to be too much. I knew everyone meant well, but I just needed to grieve my loss on my own.
I opened the door to my best friend’s outstretched arms.
“Awww, honey, you should have called me earlier. I would’ve been here hours ago,” she said, as I buried my head in her chest.
“This was supposed to be the happiest day of my life, Cass. What happened? Why did I let this happen?”
“It’ll get easier, Brookie – you’ll see,” she added reassuringly, as she ran her fingers through my tangled hair. “Why don’t we pop in a movie – I just so happened to grab Magic Mike out of the Redbox on my way over,” she said with a wink. “If Matthew McConaughey’s voice alone can’t make you ‘O’ then we have more serious issues than I thought.”
“Ohmigod, I think you have officially lost your damn mind,” I giggled. “But, thank you. You always seem to know what I need. And, a naked Channing Tatum is just what the doctor ordered.”
Just as I was setting a bowl of popcorn on the table and getting myself comfy on the couch, my phone rang. I startled from the sudden noise and reached out for it. Looking at the caller ID, I just stared at it for a few more rings.
“Cass, you need to answer it. I just can’t take this right now – especially not today.”
